How does it feel to take home the national accolade in your category?
"To be honest I feel like it’s a bit of a dream, I was so shocked and excited when I heard my name in the announcement video; I was jumping around my studio in excitement! It’s such an amazing feeling to be so supported by my followers and to win such an award!"
Tell us about your creative journey thus far and what's influenced you to arrive where you are today.
"I have been designing jewellery for as long as I can remember! I got serious with it in 2008 turning antique silver cutlery into little creatures. This was the start of Emgee. I went from taking custom orders while working in a café and then one month later stocking to 8 stores and galleries around Melbourne. Between 2012 and 2013, I studied at Box hill Institute, completing my advanced diploma in engineering and design in jewellery. Straight after graduating, I started designing, making and curating my first runway show for RAW Melbourne. It was the most amazing experience!"
From where do you draw inspiration?
"I create what I love the most. I design with the goal to make people feel beautiful. I create my dreams into object to arouse emotions within the wearer.
My inspirations do not just come from growing up around water or dreaming of mermaids. It’s hard to sum up in just a few words. Think of old black and white films and stage shows. The beautiful women photographed in their 1920’s risqué costumes and art deco performing arts. One of my favorites is a film by George Melies in 1904 ‘The Mermaid La Sirene' [...] fashion from the 1900’s to 1950’s. I have a few modern day inspirations too, mostly Photographers and fashion designers."
What's next on the horizon?
"I just finished renovating my new studio and shop in the Nicolas building in Melbourne. I have also been working on finishing a few current collections as well as an exciting collaboration for a Melbourne fashion designer."
