Visual Art – Los Angeles

Lola Gayle is a vocalist & songwriter with husband Mikael Sandgren for Los Angeles based music project MiLO. She was born in New York City to Jamaican parents and moved with her family to Los Angeles at age seven. Lola\'s image has been captured in works by video artist such as Bill Viola and photographers such as Jessica Shokrian. She has also modeled for painting artists in both the US and Europe. Lola was inspired by her then 7 year old daughter, to experiment with manipulating her own image. Lola\'s images are created by layering photo transparencies over photo, then scanning them, and later, manipulating the image\'s color, while degrading the image using Preview. After the photo is digitally complete, the image is blown up and printed on canvas, as large as 6ft x 6ft. The printed canvas is painted on, using mostly metallic and iridescent- emerald tones, combined with random collage materials from dried paint clusters to fine paper such as metallic and paper made from leaves and flower petals. C.U.S.S. stands for \'Cleans Up and Stays Strong\', a narrative of a transatlantic-diaspora of the Carribean people in America. Lola\'s visual works have a dark, tribal, and emotionally-layered quality, that has been described as taking 70\'s and 80\'s neo-graffiti art to another level.
