RAW PERFORMING ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Electriq

Electriq is one giant surprise. On one end, we have skinny white girls grooving to hip hop, while on the other end, a semi-professional body builder who dances contemporary and jazz. Electriq performs anything from theatre jazz to contemporary funk, all with a common thread: hip hop. One minute you’ll see a triple pirouette then the next a chest isolation. Our dances are eccentric, quirky, and dramatic, while at the same time always exuding gritty hip hop-like qualities of movement.

Like a volt of electricity, Electriq will shock you out of conventional dance expectations just enough to keep you curiously yearning for more. Artistic Director, Aaron Gordon, strives to keep his choreography accessible to non-dancers by stressing theatricality, storyline, and performance quality above all else. ART: Adelaide

On Thursday, October 28th, Adelaide will show you the artistic power of body movement and dance. See her live at the last RAW showcase of the 2010 at the Se Hotel in Downtown San Diego!

Tell us about yourself and Art by Adelaide.
I grew up a very unique lifestyle with parents who were artist and always encouraging picking up a crayon or twirling around in costume. My mother taught my sister and I to belly dance as she learned it from my father's Syrian side of the family. I suppose I was never officially taught, it was just a lifestyle and still is! Music, art, dance and now the blending of it all. What I love about Art by Adelaide is that it attempts to define something that has no borders. Currently, my style is to explore and see the links between all styles of body movement. I have been particularly drawn to Acrobatic and Circus style movement lately and have been really enjoying how it challenges all my habits developed from years of belly dancing. To have the control to tighten my body yet also stop to isolate my chest is a fun sensation, and from a visual stand point an obvious shift in flow.

From where do you draw inspiration for your work?
Everywhere. As a full time artist, my work inspires my work. I get inspired as people share their ideas with me, or when I hear a song that moves me, or when i feel that anything is possible. I have enough inspiration to last a lifetime, but i am working on having the time;)!

What do you love most about what you do?
I feel that creativity really draws from our natural desires to express ourselves. The ability to be creative and generate ideas that turn into reality in some shape or form is one of my favorite things about what I do.

What are your thoughts on the rising popularity and emergence of dance in the mainstream?
Although as things go mainstream they often loose some authenticity, I feel that if it generates interest in the public that it is good. I have a lot of girls who have come to my belly dance class saying they want to move like Shakira.

How do you go about choreographing your sets?
These days most of my sets are improvised, which I especially love doing to live music or good DJ's. However, when working with other people, especially if we are new to working with each other, I go about choreography in a number of different ways. I really like to pick a song that is inspiring then visualize what movements will go where. I also enjoy working with themes and story lines. Most of all I like it to be a collaborative process so it holds the energy of everyone involved.

Are there any specific reoccurring themes or subjects that you explore and deal with most in your choreography?
I have been sort of obsessed with circus themes for the last few months. I have been making costumes and listening to music that puts me in that world. Circus characters seem to embody a kind of rugged life style, separate from the normal world yet are attached to people through entertaining them. As a full time entertainer I often feel this way. I start work as people leave it, and am most of the time on opposite schedules from most people. I am living in an unpredictable evolving world that is uniquely its own, much like the traveling circus gypsies.

Any previous shows/accomplishments that you are most proud of?
More than any particular show. I am just proud to have taken multiple leaps of faith that guided me into this amazing lifestyle. I am now getting booked in Vegas at least once a month and was recently on Americas Got Talent, which led to a lot of publicity. I recently performed at a fundraiser at the Play Boy Mansion and have been working closely with the De Poc Chopra Foundation.

Why showcase at RAW?
I love the concept behind RAW! One of my favorite things about being a professional artist is that I get to partake in many mutually beneficial relationships. I want to support RAW just as they want to support me and other "raw" artists.
