Making things with my hands is insanely cathartic and so I do it as often as I can. Looking back, I have been doing some kind of crafts since I was a small child, thanks to an auntie who makes jewelry and another who is an educator. What prompted the creation of Soul and Substance was losing my grandmother in 2007. I inherited all her yarn and crochet needles, despite not knowing how to crochet. Two weeks later I lost my job. As an exercise in patience I learned to crochet. Within a week I started making crocheted hats & scarves. That turned into crocheted earrings. That turned into earrings and bracelets with chains and metal findings. I now love using anything I can get my hands on, but more particularly, leather and suede and feathers as well as beads and semi-precious stones & gems. I love colors and shapes and textures, as well as tribal, ethnic prints and animal prints and hides. I feel that translates into the pieces I create. I am Soul and Substance because I am offering you just that in every piece I create. Everything I make is a part of me. Soul is who you are...Substance is what you bring to the table.
